Brigitta Kocsis' previous work explored the relationship betwwen figuration and abstraction, with the human figure as main subject (Threshold, 2005). The contrast between figuration and abstraction signifies an emotional threshold where representation and social standards are examined. Based on contemporary media imagery (Internet, advertisements, books, magazines, etc.) she created her own snapshots where she removed the background and replaced the figures with images of herself. The media-based encounter via photography was assimilated into her own world not just through the personal image replacent process, but also through her painting process. Through carefully planned drawings as well as expressionistic brushwork she sought to examine her own artistic conversation between emotions and the rational mind.

This recent work continues to explore the space between representation and abstraction. The compositions are focused on investigating the shifting concepts of the human body and its environment. Contemporary discoveries in anatomical technologies have profoundly changed how one perceives the human body. In Secret Mechanisms, her current project, human figures are like acters depicting a kind of repellent contemporary beauty in an age where science fiction and artificial body parts are no longer fiction. Secret Mechanisms explores how technology can alter perception by interacting with the methods and processes involved in how the human body works. The tension contained within the bodies of the characters, due to the pervasive technologies, communicates a sense of contemporary environment in its fractured state.
